Cast steel is a metal that has undergone the process of casting. The process of casting involves heating metal and pouring it into a mould that is generally created from sand that has been formed into the end shape of the casting. Both steel and iron can be used to cast metal parts. The steel used in the casting process is a ferrous metal comprised mostly of iron atoms. It can be distinguished from iron by the level of carbon it contains. Cast steel contains less carbon than iron (0.12% vs. 2%), making it relatively more malleable than iron.
